This College Baseball Slugfest Included 42 Runs On Just 28 Hits

You know college baseball is in full swing when teams are putting up enough runs to convince us they were playing football instead.

Butler and Morehead State linked up for a weekend series, and their matchup on Saturday was an absolute barnburner. The Bulldogs put up 15 runs, and a team can usually feel confident they'll win a game where they score that often. But not against the Eagles, who put up 27 (!) runs. The victory improved Morehead State's record to 7-3, while Butler fell to 3-5.

Just look at how ridiculous this box score is:

The best part here is Morehead State putting up not one, but two snowmen on Butler. Those two eight-run frames would've been enough to take home the victory, but they added another 11 runs for good measure. Why not, right? No lead was safe between these squads this weekend.

It's also impressive that only 28 hits were needed to score these 42 runs. As you can imagine, there were a lot of home runs hit during this three-hour, 54-minute contest. Someone went yard 12 times. Morehead won this battle, too, as they slugged seven as a team compared to Butler's five. Center fielder Ryley Preece separated himself from the pack by being the only one to record a two-homer day at the dish. It was part of a three-hit, three-RBI, and four-run performance for the leadoff hitter, who also drew three walks.

This victory gave Morehead State the series win over Butler, but the Bulldogs ended up having the last laugh. The Eagles were going for a three-game sweep on Sunday and entered the top of the ninth with a 10-8 lead. However, they coughed up three runs while trying to close things out and couldn't respond in the bottom half of the frame.

Looks like they should've saved some of the runs they scored on Saturday for Sunday.
