Big 12 Conference School Cuts Women's Gymnastics Program

The school announced that the program will be discontinued, ending a run that included four conference titles and decades of competition in Ames.

The decision comes after a chaotic 2026 season that never really got off the ground. Earlier this year, Iowa State canceled the rest of the season because of what athletic director Jamie Pollard called "unresolvable" issues involving athletes, coaches, and parents.

Now the program itself is done.

Pollard said the university plans to replace gymnastics with another women's sport that will provide equal or greater participation opportunities for female athletes.

Current and incoming gymnasts will still have their scholarships honored if they stay at Iowa State. The athletic department also says it will help any athlete who wants to enter the transfer portal.

Meanwhile, the coaching staff will not return. Head coach Ashley Miles Greig and the rest of the staff will not have their contracts renewed.

According to Pollard, the decision wasn't about money.

Instead, the university pointed to ongoing problems within the program over the past decade. Iowa State conducted a full review in 2018 and even hired an outside law firm in 2023 to investigate concerns surrounding the team.

Changes were made, including bringing in a new coaching staff.

But when similar issues surfaced again this season, the university decided it was time to move on.

Pollard said the program's struggles ultimately came down to one thing.

The student-athlete experience simply wasn't where it needed to be.
