Waite, 26, was discovered Wednesday morning near the Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Pier at La Jolla Shores Beach after emergency crews responded to reports of an unresponsive person floating in shallow water, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Medical Examiner's Office said Waite's cause and manner of death remain pending as the San Diego Police Department continues its investigation. Authorities have not said how she entered the water or whether foul play is suspected.

Originally from Anchorage, Alaska, Waite played defender at Central Washington during the 2018 and 2019 seasons. She appeared in 15 matches and earned Great Northwest Athletic Conference All-Academic Team honors in 2019.

Friends told local media that Waite had been living in San Diego and had recently become engaged.

Several described her as kind, compassionate and deeply caring.

"She had a warmth about her that made people feel comfortable and cared for," one friend told The California Post.

Another friend said Waite "listened and loved" and would be deeply missed by those who knew her.

Investigators have not released an estimated time of death, and the circumstances surrounding Waite's death remain under investigation.
