One rider was able to avoid the obstacle at the last moment, but others had far less time to react.
Among those involved was Luxembourg cyclist Maximilien Outlet, who was riding near the front of the group when the collision occurred.
Footage appears to show Outlet striking the mobility scooter before being thrown over his handlebars in a violent crash. The incident immediately disrupted the race and sent multiple riders to the ground.
Fortunately, the injuries do not appear to have been as serious as many initially feared.
According to reports, Outlet escaped with minor injuries and bruising. Luxembourg junior national coach Heiko Lehmann later indicated that the young rider avoided major harm despite the frightening impact.
The crash quickly became a topic of discussion throughout the cycling community, with many observers expressing disbelief at how a spectator was able to enter the race route directly in front of the riders.
Cyclists in a peloton often travel at high speeds while riding just inches apart, leaving little room to maneuver when unexpected obstacles appear.
