Speedrunning may just be the oddest thing to come out of the online gaming scene, but you can't deny that it's had its benefits. Early September's impromptu Harvey Relief event managed to raise $229,520 to support victims of Hurricane Harvey in just under three days, while last year's Awesome Games Done Quick event broke records for the organization in raising over $1,000,000 for the Prevent Cancer Foundation in just one day and over $2,000,000 in total.

For those who missed either, don't fret; the schedule for the next event was just released, and details all the information you'd need to enjoy the upcoming Awesome Games Done Quick. The event starts on Sunday, January 7 at 11:30 am with a pre-show discussion between some of the genre's most well-known speedrunners before kicking off the official marathon with a run of Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy. The event will proceed over the next week with over 130 hours of gameplay until Sunday, January 14 at 6:02 am.
For those unfamiliar with the scene: Speedrunning refers to the playing of a video game with the intent of getting through it as quickly as possible. Attempts are typically recorded and streamed online, both to entertain viewers and for proof in case records are broken. While speedrunning can be attempted at any game, the most popular ones are typically classic titles released in the '90s and early 2000s - though certainly not all. Some of the first games scheduled for January's Awesome Games Done Quick event include The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Hollow Knight, and Batman: Arkham Asylum.
For more information about the upcoming event, check out the full schedule on the Games Done Quick website. Tickets for attendance have already been sold out, but you can still view all of it online on the official Twitch channel.
