In an announcement made over their official Twitter account, Bandai Namco has confirmed the arrival of Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 for the Nintendo Switch later this year.
Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 is the sequel to the original fighting game from 2015, which put players in control of their own custom characters as they fought against all of the series' iconic villains in a desperate struggle to save the universe. Through the inclusion of time travel into the game's plot, players were able to visit numerous settings and events from the show as well, such as the destruction of Namek, the attack of the Saiyans, and the rise of Cell.
Xenoverse's popularity is largely thanks to the show's success during the early 2000s. Airing exclusively over Toonami, Dragon Ball reached its peak popularity for children and teenagers drawn to the series' unusual action and art style, which at the time was still unfamiliar in the West.
Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, which released late last year, shared much of the first game's plot and fighting mechanics. Reviews at the time of its launch praised Xenoverse 2 for its improved combat and attention to story elements, which, while admittedly fan service for fans of the original show, seemed to serve up a welcome helping of nostalgia.
Bandai Namco has included a handful of features to couple with the game's late release on the Switch. According to the Tweet, Xenoverse 2 will have ad-hoc local play, allowing cooperative multiplayer with up to 6 people. Additional motion control will also be available through the Switch's joycons, which could be a mixed blessing depending on how it's implemented.
Regardless, the arrival of yet another beloved title over the Nintendo Switch is great news for the console, which has seen a revolutionary push for third-party games not heard of before for the Nintendo brand.
