RELATED: Blizzard reveals Gamescom 2017 lineup
Not one to be outdone, Blizzard's reveals have so far been some of the most exciting. The studio released a short video over YouTube featuring two of the more popular Overwatch characters, Roadhog and Junkrat, as they (or rather, one of them) talks excitedly about their plan to retake their home turf, "Junkertown." The short is actually kind of cute; there's a misplaced innocence to Junkrat that, when coupled with his apparent close relationship with insanity, delivers an amusing display of slapstick comedy. Check it out:
Junkertown is described as the two's former "home sweet home," from which Roadhog and Junkrat had been exiled by its Queen. From the video, it's clear that the developers have taken much inspiration from a combination of Borderlands and Mad Max; there's a definite feeling of lawlessness to the stitched-together, ramshackle compound. Luckily, Blizzard spared us the trouble of digging through rampant speculation with a follow-up map preview later that same day.
According to the video's description:
"Junkertown is an Escort map located in the harsh and unforgiving Australian Outback. Constructed from the remains of a destroyed omnium, it's now the home to a band of lawless scavengers known as the Junkers, led by their cutthroat Queen. When they aren't pillaging the omnium's skeleton for anything of value, the Junkers blow off steam in the Scrapyard - a massive gladiatorial arena whose combatants fight for glory, riches... and to survive."
It certainly sounds like an interesting premise for the map, though considering how Blizzard has handled Overwatch's lore so far, there will probably be little to no explanation as to why the team is both helping Junkrat and Roadhog blow up the place while simultaneously defending it from the other side. The studio did provide a number of screenshots for map as well, though.
There's been no word yet as to when Junkertown will be hitting live servers, so unless you're one of the lucky few able to play it as Gamescom, it could be a while before the map is playable. There are still a few days remaining before the event ends, however, and we already know Blizzard has a lot up their sleeve, so be sure to stay tuned for any future news about Overwatch or any of the studio's other popular titles.
