Or, rather, it has been confirmed. EA revealed in a recent interview with Eurogamer that the loot crates in Battlefront 2 can be purchased with real money.

Although in every way an expected outcome of Battlefront 2's progression system, the news has nevertheless come as an unpleasant surprise to much of the community, sparking outrage threads and calls for boycotts. This is largely due to the content provided by the crates, which, as pointed out in our first article, do provide significant upgrades to player classes including health and damage increases.
The loot boxes are of course obtainable otherwise through ranking up and will provide the same upgrades regardless, but purchasing the crates via real world transactions will still grant players an edge, especially shortly after launch.
Some early access participants have defended the announcement, stating that it takes little time to acquire the crates normally and that microtransactions will likely have little effect on the base game. Whether or not that's true, EA's less-than-positive reputation with the gaming community has already proved enough of an excuse for many to swear off Battlefront 2 before it ever reaches stores.
For those not discouraged by this reveal, Star Wars: Battlefront 2 will launch on November 17, 2017 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC through EA's Origin client.
