The Emperor makes an unexpected return in Star Wars: Battlefront 2's latest trailer

The Emperor's methods are as "unusual" as they are sinister.

Determined to keep last week's promise regarding a wealth of new details on the upcoming title, Electronic Arts has released a number of media trailers for Star Wars: Battlefront 2 over the last few days. Tuesday's trailer featured John Boyega of The Force Awakens as he narrated all of the new changes coming with the title, which included maps, classes, revamped star cards, and a whole lot more, while just yesterday another trailer showcased a short clip from the story campaign of Battlefront 2. The trailer features protagonist Iden Versio in a conversation with her father as they discuss the recent destruction of the second Death Star, the threat of the growing rebellion, and the apparent death of the Emperor. I do say "apparent," because Palpatine's demise at the hands of Darth Vader in The Return of the Jedi seems only slightly limiting; his pale visage lives on in an evidently pre-programmed droid that carries on its late master's will to the two characters (to an extent).

While the reappearance of the Emperor almost seems like a cheap tie-in to the original films, the presence of the droid actually originated in the Shattered Empire miniseries a couple of years back. The Sentinels, as they're called, were designed years in advance of the events of the movies as a contingency plan should the Emperor ever fall. Just as in the trailer, the sole purpose of the (rather creepy) droids is to carry out the posthumous will of their creator, which in this case involves the mysterious "Operation: Cinder."

What this Operation entails is still up in the air, though we can guess the name originates from the "burning away" of concepts like resistance and rebellion, an act in which the appropriately-named Inferno Squad seems perfectly suited for. The only real question on most player's minds regarding the story is how Iden Versio will react to the coming trials. The shifting of previously-evil characters to the light side has always been a central theme of the Star Wars series, and whether or not Versio will play out this point or stick to her guns will likely have some sway over general reception to the story.

Until then, there's not much else to do but speculate and wait patiently. Star Wars: Battlefront 2 releases for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on November 17, 2017 for $59.99.
