The 25-year-old boxer suffered "severe bleeding and swelling" to his brain during the bout, which ended in the fifth round. Towell had to be stretchered out of the fight, according to the report, and was taken to the hospital where he was put on life support. He was taken off of life support on Friday and died 12 hours.

Towell (11-0-1) was undefeated coming into the welterweight title, and had been knocked down twice Thursday night, once in the first round and fifth round before the stoppage, per the report.

Towell reportedly complained of migraines leading up to the fight, but thought it was just stress. He is survived by his wife and young son.
