Derrick Lewis didn't show much on the offensive end for much of the first round, but all he needed was an opening to show off his heavy hands and put one-time heavyweight contender Gabriel Gonzaga to sleep.
Gonzaga (17-11) kept Lewis at bay, using the clinch and taking the "Black Beast" to the mat in a relatively dominant first round. With under a minute remaining in the round, Lewis (15-4) finally got the opening he needed and hit Gonzaga with a flurry of punches before putting him to sleep to end the bout.
After the fight Lewis didn't get the Bud Light he wanted, but did the land the big fight that could put him into contendership in the loaded division. Former Ultimate Fighter winner Roy Nelson noted Lewis will be his next opponent, most likely at UFC 200 in July.
Lewis has won three consecutive fights, and has 14 of his wins by knockout.
Gonzaga lost his lone championship fight to Randy Couture in 2007.
