Former WWE champion reveals he was originally in line for a huge WrestleMania moment

He certainly deserved it.

Chris Jericho fell to former best friend Kevin Owens at Wrestlemania 33 in a United States championship match.

But that wasn't the original plan for Jericho according to the WWE legend.

When asked about why his latest run ended the way it did, Jericho dropped a huge nugget on what Vince McMahon's original idea was for him during WrestleMania season this year.

Via Rajah:

"It wasn't supposed to be that way. I was supposed to finish up after WrestleMania, that Monday afterward, and about - I don't know, December maybe, Vince called me in and he had a big idea - I can probably say this now. The original idea, cause things change all the time, was for me and Kevin Owens to work at WrestleMania, for me to win the title, and then to lose it to Brock in Sacramento at the next pay-per-view (PPV), which was April 30th. And so when you get presented with that idea it's like 'Sure, of course, I'll stay for that.' Then as things go, the Goldberg factor started and Vince changed his mind. At that point, I was already locked in for an extra month."

This is a stark contrast from what actually ended up happening at WrestleMania 33.

If Goldberg doesn't get over the way he does, it certainly seems like Jericho would have beaten Owens for the WWE Universal Title at WrestleMania this year in a major program, and not lose the United States championship.

To win the Universal title from Owens, to then face Brock Lesnar in the main event of the next PPV would have been really interesting to see. What ultimately happened instead was still very good, especially for Owens, but Jericho was one of the hottest acts in wrestling this year, and giving him this kind of moment at WrestleMania would have been awesome to see.
