Potentially the biggest return in WWE history happened 16 years ago today

A special return helped The Rock capture the WWE title 16 years ago.

Professional wrestling lives for that one moment, that pinnacle of action that causes the crowd and every at home to just absolutely lose their minds. Moments like Hulk Hogan lifting Andre the Giant at WrestleMania III all the way to Daniel Bryan winning the title at WrestleMania 30 fit this bill.

Another one of those that certainly fits this description? The Backlash pay-per-view from 2000, centered around a main-event between The Rock and the champion, Triple H. The evil Mr. McMahon character had stacked the odds against the Rock, seemingly gifting Triple H the win until the moment above happened.

Stone Cold Steve Austin made the save for The Rock, making his first appearance since November of the previous year due to neck surgery. This would not serve as Austin's official return to the ring, but his appearance was enough to generate one of the biggest reactions in WWE history, with some debating that it might even be the biggest.

Stone Cold would clear out everyone in the ring with a chair, with even Vince McMahon taking a headshot from the steel object. This left the ring clear for The Rock and Triple H to settle the match in a more one-on-one setting.

The Rock would go on to win the match, capturing his fourth WWE Championship with the win. Stone Cold would make his official return later in the year at the Unforgiven pay-per-view in September.
