Former champion is reportedly coming out of retirement after career-ending injury

Didn't see this one coming.

WWE legend Santino Marella is reportedly returning to the ring for the first time since 2014 after suffering what was then thought to be a career-ending injury.

Marella, who was officially released from WWE in May of 2016, is reportedly going to have to return to the ring in the Destiny World Wrestling promotion, according to a report from Wrestling Inc. The promotion uses Santino's Battle Arts Academy to perform, and, because of their win against a rival promotion who also performs at the academy, Santino has to wrestle another match because of the stipulation.

The legendary comedy character may not be returning to a WWE ring, but it is interesting that he'd be willing to jump back inside the squared circle — especially when you take into account his injury history and the assumed risk involved in wrestling another match.

Still, Marella was one of the most interesting character in WWE for a long time, and his mid-card comedy presence has certainly been missed at times since his departure from the company.

Marella is a two-time WWE Intercontinental champion.
