Saul Peralta, a 27-year-old lightweight boxer from Argentina, fell into a coma after he took a beating in the ring during a match Saturday in Santa Fe, Argentina.
Peralta (9-6) faced undefeated Elias Araujo (16-0), and in the sixth round, Araujo landed several hard blows that dropped Peralta. Even though Peralta got up, he quickly went down again after talking more punishment.
For some reason, Peralta's wife was in the corner instead of his regular trainer, according to the New York Post, which quoted her as saying her husband is "still in a serious condition, in a coma, with a respirator, now the sedatives have been removed to see how he reacts, if not convulsing."
Peralta is at least the third boxer this year who has fallen into a coma following a bout in the ring. Earlier this week, Tim Hague, a MMA fighter turned boxer, died after he was knocked out in the second round of a match. While he was able to leave the ring, complications later arose that led to his death. In January, Daniel Franco fell into a coma after he was knocked out an suffered bleeding on the brain. He just had another surgery last week,
