North Carolina Central has named King the first head coach of its women's flag football program, which will begin competition during the 2026-27 academic year.
King already works on NCCU's football staff as an offensive analyst, assisting with the wide receivers and game management. She'll remain in that role while building the school's new flag football program.
"What better way to begin our flag football program than with Jennifer King as head coach," athletic director Louis "Skip" Perkins said. "We are excited to have someone of Jennifer's caliber guide our student-athletes as we begin this new chapter in NCCU Athletics."
King made history with Washington in 2021 when she became the NFL's first Black female full-time coach, serving as assistant running backs coach. She later worked for the Chicago Bears as an offensive assistant and running backs coach.
Her coaching résumé extends well beyond the NFL.
King previously worked as an offensive assistant at Dartmouth and coached women's basketball at Johnson & Wales University in North Carolina, leading the program to a USCAA Division II national championship in her second season.
She also has plenty of experience playing football herself. King competed professionally in the Women's Football Alliance and Women's National Football Conference, lining up at quarterback, wide receiver and defensive back.
Now she'll be tasked with starting a program from scratch. NCCU is one of six schools scheduled to compete in women's flag football in the MEAC.
