The 28-year-old, who was set to attend training camp with the Arena league's Michigan Arsenal, was killed early Saturday morning during a shooting at a bar in Acworth, Georgia.

According to police, Jones was working security at Saddle Bar when a fight broke out between two individuals. Authorities say Jones stepped in to break it up, as relayed by Fox 5 Atlanta.

Moments later, he was shot.

Officers responded to the scene around 2:46 a.m. and found Jones suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital but later died from his injuries.

Police arrested 25-year-old Daniel Di Vonne Parsons in connection with the shooting. He is currently being held without bond and faces charges including murder, aggravated assault and aggravated battery.

For those who knew Jones, the loss has been devastating.

Friends and former teammates from Mountain View (Ga.) High School described him as a "gentle giant" who looked out for everyone around him.

"He was like a big brother," one friend told Fox 5. "If anybody needed help, Jordan was the guy stepping in."

That same instinct may have cost him his life.

The Arsenal released a statement saying they had been excited to welcome Jones to training camp, calling him a young man whose talent and character stood out immediately.
