According to Louisville Metro Police, via WDRB, officers responded Saturday to Iroquois High School, where roughly 300 people had gathered for a youth football tournament. A man was found with a gunshot wound to the thigh and was taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Police said 41-year-old Gerrard Harris fled the scene after the shooting but was taken into custody following a brief foot chase through a nearby neighborhood.
Investigators said witnesses identified Harris as the suspected shooter, and officers later recovered a firearm nearby. Authorities said a shell casing found at the scene matched the recovered weapon.
Police also alleged Harris resisted efforts to perform a gunshot residue test following his arrest.
Harris faces multiple charges, including assault, tampering with physical evidence, unlawful possession of a weapon on school property, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, wanton endangerment and prohibited firearms discharge. Court records show he pleaded not guilty during his arraignment, and a judge set bond at $500,000.
The shooting occurred during the annual Clash of the Titans youth football tournament, an event that drew teams from multiple states.
Despite the violence, organizers said they were determined not to let the incident end the event.
"We're not going to let the devil win," Louisville Titans Youth Mentor Program president Antwan Lovelace told WDRB. "We're not going to let a negative situation stop the impact of what we're trying to do with the kids."
Tournament officials moved the remaining games to another location so play could continue.
