Football players are accustomed to getting their helmets rattled. They're probably not accustomed to discovering the thing doing the rattling is a venomous snake.

A high school football player at Maumelle High School in Arkansas got quite the surprise during practice last week when he felt something moving inside his helmet, per CBS News.
He'd already been wearing it for nearly an hour.
After warmups, the player finally took off his helmet and brought it to an assistant coach. That's when they discovered a roughly 2-foot cottonmouth tucked behind the padding.

Getting the snake out wasn't particularly easy, either.
Animal control officers eventually submerged the helmet in water to force the stubborn visitor out before grabbing it with tongs. Animal services personnel identified the snake as a cottonmouth, one of the most venomous snakes found in Arkansas.
Thankfully, the player wasn't bitten.
"It was unreal," animal services director Chris Davis said. "You had to kind of be there and take pictures to say this was real."
Perhaps the craziest part? The player apparently wasn't ready to call it a day. He simply grabbed another helmet and went back to practice.
The snake was later released in a wooded area, while Maumelle's head coach used the incident as a reminder for players to check their equipment before putting it on.
You know, just in case. Insects, spiders, loose padding. Venomous snakes.
