Amateur Golfer José Luis Ballester Faces Backlash At Masters After Being Caught Peeing In Rae’s Creek

Spanish amateur golfer José Luis Ballester may not have been well-known before this year's Masters, yet now he has now gone viral for what he did on the 13th hole at Augusta Thursday afternoon, and it had nothing to do with his golf performance.

That is, the 21-year-old Arizona State golfer went the bathroom in the infamous Rae's Creek, which may have been a first considering there were restrooms nearby.

"I completely forgot that we had those restrooms on the left of the tee box," Ballester told reporters.

"And then I'm like, 'I really need to pee.' Didn't really know where to go, and since JT [Justin Thomas] had an issue on the green, I'm just like, 'Okay I'm just going to go sneak here in the river.'"

Somehow Ballester thought he would go unnoticed, when he was urinating right near "Amen Corner."

"Probably people would not see me that much," He said. "And then they clapped for me."

As for if he regretted his decision, the young golfer said, "It was not embarrassing at all for me. If I had to do it again, I'd do it again."

Although many of the spectators cheered Ballester on by giving him a round of applause, not everyone thought this behavior was appropriate, as it seemingly goes against the highly-esteemed Masters' etiquette.

Notably, Ballester earned the right to participate in this year's Major, following his impressive 2024 US Amateur win at Hazeltine in Minnesota.

While being paired with defending champion Scottie Scheffler (-4) and Justin Thomas (+1), the young golfer held his own, ending day 1 shooting +4 over par (76).

Ultimately, Augusta National officials may have to put some signs up prohibiting peeing in the course's water hazards.
