The 2026 Masters at Augusta National Golf Club featured a surprising moment, courtesy of one patron watching the action.

As defending champion Rory McIlroy finished hitting the ball off the tee on the 17th hole, a patron yelled, "Give me back my son" while channeling his inner Mel Gibson. This is not a random statement. It is a quote from the film Ransom.

The CBS Sports cameras clearly captured audio of the random shout, as well as some of the subsequent laughter from some other patrons. McIlroy was not among this group. His focus remained on his shot, which went left and into the trees.
He ultimately bogeyed the hole and fell into a tie with Cameron Young entering the final day of the Masters. However, he recovered in a major way.
McIlroy went on to win the Masters for the second consecutive season while becoming only the fourth golfer in history to achieve the feat. He is the first since Tiger Woods in 2001-2002.
While McIlroy just went about his business and continued his title defense, the patron who quoted Gibson became the talk of social media. Many people weighed in on the situation and voiced a wide variety of opinions.
Some viewers pointed to the prestige of the tournament while saying that the patron had probably been escorted off the premises. Others called for a permanent ban from the property, as well as far more violent repercussions.
To their point, millions of people try to acquire tickets to the Masters each year. A small percentage is successful.
Some other social media users showed their support for the patron. One particular CEO wrote that "Whoever just yelled 'give me back my son' in a Mel Gibson voice during Rory's tee shot on 17 should get a green jacket," referencing the iconic jacket given to the winners of the prestigious tournament.
