The charges facing PGA star Scottie Scheffler for attempting to drive around a fatal accident during the week of the PGA Championship may not hold up, as relayed by the New York Post.
"Jefferson County attorney Mike O'Connell is slated to address the case at 1 p.m. (on Wednesday)," the Post reported. "Attorney Steve Romines will represent the golfer, who will not be on hand, according to WDRB. Romines told the outlet he would have a press conference a half hour after O'Connell is set to speak, though, as of now, Scheffler is still scheduled to be arraigned on Monday."
Scheffler is accused of failing to follow an order from police to stop his vehicle — and then dragging one of the officers with his car. But the arresting officer apparently failed to turn on his bodycam, "and footage from a nearby traffic pole only showed the officer approaching the vehicle, which appeared to be moving at a slow pace," the Post wrote.
Scheffler's attorney told ESPN that Scheffler intends to enter a not-guilty plea.
"LMPD also said it is not aware of any video footage that captures the initial interaction between LMPD and Scheffler," the Post reported.
At the time, Scheffler was making his way to the second round of the PGA Championship in Louisville.
"This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers. It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do," a statement from Scheffler read.
"I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I'm hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today."
