Others wore shirts with "Free Scottie" scribbled on in large black letters. Scheffler was arrested prior to Friday's second round after allegedly failing to yield at the scene of a fatal traffic accident, dragging a police officer with his car. He was placed in cuffs, though eventually released to arrive at the tournament.
Scheffler was captured by ESPN's Jeff Darlington on video for what Scheffler called "a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do" as he tried to maneuver around a fatal traffic accident. He was arrested and placed in handcuffs.
"This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers. It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do," the statement from Scheffler read.
"I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I'm hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today."
