It's time for a major, which used to be Tiger Woods' time to shine. Not so much anymore. Woods missed the cut at the PGA Championship last month and is in danger of doing the same at the U.S. Open in Pinehurst, North Carolina. He will need a throwback performance to avoid it, in fact.
Woods shot a four-over 74 on Thursday, and sits in a tie for 124th place. The top 60 make the cut. More specifically, Woods is nine back of first-day leader Patrick Cantlay.
And that's just at this writing. Scottie Scheffler had yet to tee off. So woods could fall even further back once the afternoon wave is complete.
Per Yahoo Sports:
"After a birdie to open his day, he made five birdies in seven holes around the turn before finishing with a 4-over 74. He'll need a big outing on Friday in order to make the cut, something he failed to do last month at the PGA Championship."
This comes a day after Woods was given the USGA's Bob Jones Award and made a touching speech focused on his family.
"My family made a tough decision, and at the age of 14 and a half, we took out a second mortgage so I could go out and play the AJGA Tour," he said.
"Mom stayed at home. Dad traveled. And I went out and played the AJGA Tour on our second mortgage."
Woods attended the event supported by his mother, Kutilda, 80, and his children, Sam, 16, and Charlie, 15. His best days are clearly behind him, but man, what a run it was.
