According to The Big Lead, Krug passed away in mid-January. The only people who posted the news were members of his family, who provided the update on social media.

"I'm going to miss you brother Chris. You have left a lot of good memories for all of us. Rest in peace," Alice Krug posted on Facebook in mid-January.

A Los Angeles native, Krug made his professional debut in 1965 at the age of 25. He appeared in 79 games over three part-time seasons (1965, 1966, 1969). He spent the first two seasons of his career with the Chicago Cubs and his final season with the San Diego Padres.

A right-handed catcher, he had 356 putouts and 34 assists during his brief career. He turned seven double plays and picked off two runners at base.

As a hitter, Krug posted 214 at bat appearances. He registered 41 hits, 15 bases on balls, and five home runs. He scored 17 runs, all with the Chicago Cubs. He only had one hit in eight games with the San Diego Padres.

The former Cubs catcher also played a role in a historic night for the Dodgers. He had an error that led to the Dodgers only score in the 1-0 victory, and he failed to get on base in three attempts as Dodgers pitcher Sandy Koufax became the first lefty to throw a perfect game.

"I wasn't thinking anything about the perfect game," Krug said in 2025, per MLB. "I was just thinking about being a hitter."

"My first at-bat was a line drive to center, and they said if I pulled it, it would have been a double. The second time I grounded to (shortstop Maury Wills), and he threw the ball in the dirt at first base and Wes Parker dug it out.

"And you know what happened in the ninth," he added while referencing him striking out as Koufax neared the perfect game.
