MLB veteran reliever Trevor May announced his retirement this week. How'd he celebrate? By ripping his former team's owner.
May — who played the ninth and final season of his MLB career with the Oakland A's — announced on his Twitch stream that he was officially retiring from professional baseball on Monday. He went on to say, "To the A's organization and every single person part of it, I love all of you, every single one of you, except for one person. And we all know who that guy is."
While May didn't name that "guy," it soon became clear that he was talking about John Fisher, the A's owner, once he said, "Sell the team, dude. Let someone who actually, like, takes pride in the things they own, own something. There's actually people who give a s—- about the game. Let them do it. Take mommy and daddy's money somewhere else, dork."
May goes on to say that his vitriol for Fisher — who has been the A's majority owner since 2005 and the team's sole owner since 2016 — is rooted in Fisher's desire to relocate the A's to Las Vegas. It's a move that has been heavily criticized by the Oakland A's faithful and will cost countless Oakland residents their jobs.
At the very least, May wants Fisher to take accountability for that.
"You're putting hundreds, if not thousands, of people out of work," May said on his Twitch stream. "That have worked [at the A's stadium] for decades. And you haven't acknowledged that at all. "
In addition, the A's finished the 2023 regular season with a 50-112 record (worst in the MLB); they always rank near the league's bottom in payroll; and Fisher hasn't showed any intention to improve his team's on-field product. In fact, Fisher has avoided the spotlight entirely — which May is also upset about.
"If you're going to be a greedy f—-, own it," May said. "There's nothing weaker than being afraid of cameras."
It seems that May — who had 21 saves for the A's in 2023 and went 4-4 with a 3.28 ERA in 46-2/3 innings — had a lot to get off his chest during his brief tenure in Oakland. And his harsh words echoed the sentiment of many.
Not that Fisher will do anything about it.
