Another Nightmare Moment for the Boston Red Sox Just Happened

The Boston Red Sox are dealing with an apparent injury to an important member of the roster. Outfielder/designated hitter Roman Anthony had to leave a game due to an issue with his hand and wrist area.

The moment occurred during Anthony's first at-bat against the Detroit Tigers on Monday night. The left-hander swung at a pitch in the first inning and connected, but he sent the ball into foul territory. He then stepped away from the plate to chat with the umpire, interim manager Chad Tracy, and head athletic trainer Brandon Henry.

Anthony continued to stretch out his hand and wrist as the broadcast crew analyzed a replay of his swing. They said that this was an abbreviated swing and that doing so at full speed can cause issues with the hand and wrist area.

The Florida native took some practice swings and then grounded into a fielder's choice. He also spent some time in the outfield before ultimately exiting the game with the "right hand discomfort."

Masataka Yoshida then came into the game in the bottom of the second inning. He replaced Anthony in left field as the Red Sox went on to win 5-4.

Anthony said after the game that he had taken a swing and that it just didn't feel good. He called the swing painful but later noted that his X-rays came back negative.

"Imaging tonight was negative, but we are gonna send him back to Boston to see our hand specialist just to let him look at it and make sure," Tracy said after the game, per MassLive. "I think the whole point is to get him back with our specialist to see him and see how he is. If everything's good, we'll get him back here. But we've got to get him back there first."

Anthony is currently in his second season with the Red Sox. He has made 109 at-bat appearances, and he has delivered 25 hits with one home run and five RBIs. He has scored 12 runs this season.
