Caballero has been added to the 10-day injured list due to a fractured middle finger. He injured this finger diving back onto first base during a game against the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Yankees made a corresponding move to replace Caballero for the time being. The team has recalled Anthony Volpe from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Speaking with reporters on Monday, Caballero expressed the belief that he did not have a fractured finger. However, he traveled back to New York for an MRI and a visit with team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad.

"There's definitely some concern because Cabby, he's as tough as they come," manager Aaron Boone said, per the New York Post.

"Just had a little hard time when he went to throw today. The good thing is hitting was good. So we'll see. He's going to get some tests (Tuesday) morning. See what we have over the next day or two."

The team ultimately confirmed the fracture on Tuesday afternoon while announcing Caballero's move to the 10-day injured list.

Volpe had been the team's primary shortstop since the 2023 season, the same year that he won the Gold Glove Award. He played in 472 games over three seasons while hitting 52 home runs and accounting for 192 RBIs.

However, he had to undergo surgery over the offseason due to a torn labrum in his left shoulder. The expectation entering the season is that Volpe would just reclaim his starting job once healthy, but that did not happen.

He had struggled at bat while rehabbing in the minors. Caballero, however, had hit .259 with four home runs, eight bases on balls, and 13 RBIs. He has also stolen 13 bases in 41 games.

"Caballero is playing the heck out of the position and is playing really well," Boone said. "That complicates it. ... Jose has (earned) himself more playing time.

"I love the idea of Jose being in a super-utility role because he's so good at it, but you also can't ignore he's played so well defensively at shortstop (and) been a real spark for us offensively."
