Baker Mayfield Spotted at Yankees Batting Practice

While Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield waits and sees whether the team he took to the Divisional Round of the playoffs last season wants to resign him, he's spending time working on another sport.

On Thursday, the New York Yankees' MLB insider Bryan Hoch posted a video on X of Mayfield taking batting practice at the Yankees' spring training facility.

Mayfield — who took his hacks in front of both Aaron Judge and Juan Soto — entered the left-handed batter's box and started smashing line drives into the outfield.

Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe — who was seen attending a Tampa Bay Lightning game with Mayfield in January — said that Mayfield had a, "Good-looking swing, for sure. A lot of contact."

Although Mayfield is worried about the Bucs contacting him before NFL free agency begins on Monday.

When speaking with the YES Network after his batting practice concluded, Mayfield said, "I'm a little rusty, as you could tell. It's awesome getting to meet some of these guys. I'm a big baseball fan, so meeting some of these guys in person and watching them up close in batting practice, it's special."

Mayfield also told the YES broadcast that baseball was his favorite sport growing up — and understands how difficult the sport can be.

"I'll say this: it's always fun to talk about the opposite sports, and the dreams we had of playing the other sports," Mayfield said. "Their hand-eye coordination is truly elite. I couldn't track some of these balls coming in that fast."

With his day at the ballpark now behind him, Mayfield is likely spending his weekend near the phone, waiting on whether the the success he had with the Bucs last season will result in a long-term deal

Although even if the Bucs don't resign Mayfield, the former Heisman trophy winner and No. 1 overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft did more than enough last season to prove that he's a solid starting quarterback in the NFL.

If Mayfield somehow doesn't find an NFL team, perhaps the Yankees will be willing to give him a tryout.
