Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Tanner Scott's wife, Maddie Scott, revealed on social media that she and her family received disturbing messages and threats following the team's loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday.
Scott entered the game in the eighth inning with the Dodgers holding a 3-1 lead. The Phillies rallied for three runs against the veteran left-hander and went on to win 4-3.
After the game, Maddie Scott shared screenshots of messages she received online, including threats directed at her family and comments targeting the couple's children.
"When did it stop being a game?" she wrote alongside one of the posts.
Maddie said she rarely speaks publicly about the abuse athletes and their families receive but felt compelled to share what was happening behind the scenes.
"I don't speak out often. Ever actually," she wrote. "I promise you, you don't know what it's like unless you're living it."
According to her posts, some of the messages included violent language and hateful remarks directed at the couple's young son, as well as their unborn child.
Tanner and Maddie Scott welcomed their first child in 2023 and are expecting another baby later this year.
The 31-year-old Scott signed with the Dodgers before the 2025 season and has been a key part of the club's bullpen since arriving in Los Angeles.
While criticism comes with playing professional sports, many MLB fans and observers were quick to point out that threatening athletes and their families is far beyond the boundaries of normal fandom.
