The former MLB outfielder was found guilty by a jury of lying to federal investigators about his involvement in an illegal sports gambling operation. He was convicted on one count of obstruction of justice and one count of making false statements.
This one goes back a few years. According to prosecutors, Puig started placing bets in 2019 through an illegal gambling ring run by Wayne Nix. At first, it was done through a middleman. Then it escalated quickly.
By June of that year, Puig reportedly owed nearly $283,000. It didn't stop there.
After paying $200,000 to regain access to betting accounts, Puig continued wagering. A lot. Investigators say he placed 899 additional bets on sports like tennis, football, and basketball.
Some of those bets? They were made at MLB stadiums.
By the end of it, prosecutors say Puig had racked up close to $1 million in gambling debt that he never paid.
Then Came the Federal Investigation Against Yasiel Puig
In a 2022 interview with agents, Puig was warned that lying would be a crime. Prosecutors say he did it anyway. He denied discussing gambling with his contact and claimed he didn't know key details about the payments.
According to evidence presented at trial, those statements weren't true.
There's more: Authorities also said Puig made false statements during his U.S. citizenship process, denying any involvement in illegal gambling activities.
At one point, investigators say Puig even admitted in a voice message that he had lied during questioning.
Now Yasiel Puig Is Facing Serious Consequences
Puig is scheduled to be sentenced on May 26 and could face up to 10 years in prison for obstruction, plus additional time for the false statements.
For a player once known for his electric style on the field, this is a very different kind of spotlight.
Puig played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Guardians from 2013-19.
