Jordan Montgomery's Free-Agent Market Consists of These MLB Teams

Spring training is getting underway this week across Florida and Arizona. However, there are still many unsigned free agents who need a home for 2024 and beyond. One of those is starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery, and the destination that has constantly seemed most likely may not be an option anymore.

The Athletic's Jim Bowden discussed the status of some of the top remaining free agents, along with thoughts on where they could land. He notes that Montgomery's preference appears to be re-signing with the Texas Rangers, where he won the 2023 World Series. But if they can't find a way to bring the Scott Boras client back, Bowden notes that the Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, and New York Yankees "could be in play."

Based on a recent update from Rangers general manager Chris Young, it seems like the southpaw will have to seriously start considering other options. While chatting with reporters on February 14, including Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News, Young plainly stated, "I don't think there are any additions coming at this point."

Texas' top front-office executive didn't completely close the door on signing another free agent, stating the club will "keep an open mind" as possibilities present themselves. The Rangers have been dealing with issues involving their television contract, which has created uncertainty for long-term revenue. It's been a big reason why the club — which has spent hundreds of millions of dollars in free agency each of the last two winters — has been very quiet on the acquisition front.

With this uncertainty staring the defending champs in the face, it's not surprising to see them not pull the trigger on a deal with Montgomery. MLB Trade Rumors predicted he'd land a six-year, $150 million contract in free agency. However, Boras has been using Aaron Nola's seven-year, $172 million deal as a comp in negotiations, per the New York Post's Joel Sherman.

If the Rangers truly are out of the running for Montgomery, maybe his market will finally start moving before spring training games begin.
