According to the team's website, Scherzer will head to the 15-day IL list due to right forearm tendinitis and left ankle inflammation. The Blue Jays made the move on Monday, the same day they lost to the Boston Red Sox 5-0.
The forearm tendonitis has been a lingering issue for Scherzer, who has allowed 22 hits and 20 home runs this season. He has 20 earned runs against him.
The ankle injury has been more problematic recently. The three-time Cy Young Award winner has noticed that it has led to him shifting his throwing mechanics.
"I could just tell I wasn't right. Pete (Walker, pitching coach) was right there and we both saw it," Scherzer said, per the Blue Jays.
"We just didn't feel I was in a good enough spot to go forward. Based on the calendar, here in April, it's early in the season and this is just a point in time where I can get right."
The current plan is for the veteran pitcher to take a traditional approach to getting back to full strength. He will focus on rest and rehab while remaining on the 15-day IL. Although it will come at a time when the team deals with multiple other injuries.
Cody Ponce tore his ACL while Shane Bieber continues to recover from elbow and forearm issues. Bowden Francis underwent Tommy John surgery.
Trey Yesavage will return to the lineup in time to face the Red Sox on Tuesday night. This will mark his first appearance of the season as the Blue Jays (12-16) try to make some moves in the struggling AL East. A win against the Red Sox (12-17) will keep the Blue Jays in fourth place in the division.
