The Major League Baseball (MLB) team put the right-handed pitcher on the 15-day injured list in late April. Senga, who received an epidural, had started the season 0-4 in five starts.

He had an earned run average (ERA) of 9.00, and he had allowed three runs in just over two innings against the Colorado Rockies before the team put him on the IL.

The Mets responded to the roster move by choosing to recall right-handed pitcher Christian Scott from Triple-A Syracuse.

A positive update occurred on May 6. The team's beat writer, Anthony DiComo, wrote on X that, "Kodai Senga (lumbar spine inflammation) restarted a throwing program today. He's just playing catch right now and will need a buildup, but Senga is at least on his way."

Additionally, team manager Carlos Mendoza spoke about the recovery progress on Wednesday. He said that, "(Senga is) feeling a lot better, so now we've got to build him back up."

Prior to the move to the 15-day injured list, Senga and Mendoza both indicated that conversations needed to happen about the pitcher's future with the team. One potential option included a move down to Triple-A.

"I don't know what's gonna come," Senga said about his future through an interpreter. "But I know that the performance out on the field isn't something where I can be like, 'Oh, I'm gonna be in the rotation or this, and that is gonna happen.' I don't know what's gonna happen."

The Japanese pitcher is in his fourth season with the Mets. He earned All-Star honors in 2023 despite leading the league with 14 wild pitches. He struck out 202 batters and went 12-7 as a starter.

Senga started 29 games in 2023 and 22 games in 2025. However, he only played in one game in 2024 due to a high-grade left calf strain.
