"We are saddened by the passing of Hall of Fame second baseman Bill Mazeroski, who hit one of the greatest home runs in baseball history," MLB wrote in a statement.
"On Oct. 13, 1960, Game 7 of the World Series, bottom of the 9th inning, Mazeroski smashed a walk-off home run to lead the Pirates to a 10-9 win over the Yankees for the championship."
This home run will forever be immortalized in the city of Pittsburgh. A statue of the West Virginia native rounding the bases sits outside PNC Park, the home of the Pirates.
This home run served as only one pivotal moment in the career of Mazeroski, who won two championships with the Pirates. He became a 10-time All-Star while leading the league in assists nine times. He led the league in putouts five times and double plays eight times.
Mazeroski earned Gold Glove honors eight times during his Hall of Fame career. This award recognizes the player who has shown superior individual fielding skills.
"His name will always be tied to the biggest home run in baseball history and the 1960 World Series championship, but I will remember him most for the person he was," said Pirates Chairman Bob Nutting in a statement.
"Maz was one of a kind, a true Pirates legend, a National Baseball Hall of Famer, and one of the finest defensive second basemen the game has ever seen."
