'Bloodsport' and 'Revenge of the Nerds' Actor Dies After Health Issues: Donald Gibb Was 71

Donald Gibb, a longtime actor known for his towering size, passed away on May 12 at his home in Texas. He was 71 years old.

The family confirmed the passing with a statement to Rolling Stone. They wrote to the outlet that Gibb was a loving father, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend.

"Donald loved the Lord, his family, his friends, and his fans with all his heart," the family wrote to Rolling Stone. "Known for his larger-than-life presence on screen and his kindness off screen, he brought joy, laughter, and unforgettable memories to countless people throughout his life and career."

The family added that he will be remembered by "those who had the privilege of knowing him personally and by the many fans whose lives he touched over the years."

The family asked "for prayers and privacy for the family during this difficult time while celebrating a life well lived and a legacy that will continue on forever."

Gibb, who was born in New York, appeared in numerous TV shows and films throughout his career. Many remember him for playing Ogre in the Revenge of the Nerds franchise, but he also played Ray "Tiny" Jackson in the martial arts films Bloodsport and Bloodsport 2. 

The longtime actor also took on the world of professional football for one of his roles. He joined the cast of 1st & Ten, a TV series that ran for 80 episodes during the mid-1980s. This show, which featured OJ Simpson in a prominent role, had Gibbs in the role of Leslie Dr. Death Crunchner.

The big man continued to play numerous roles as his life progressed. This includes the Tommy Lee Jones-led US Marshals, the Willi Smith-led Hancock, and multiple episodes of the sitcom Step by Step. Gibb also took lent his voice to multiple video games, including Rage and Mafia II.
