Zheenaliev died May 12 at Lake Issyk-Kul near the village of Baktuu-Dolonotu, according to local officials. His body was recovered the following day.

Authorities said Zheenaliev entered the water after noticing a group of teenage girls in distress as strong currents pulled one of them under. He and another individual were able to guide all four safely back to shore, officials said, but Zheenaliev did not resurface.

Divers later located his body, and officials ruled the death a drowning during the rescue.

Zheenaliev competed as a welterweight in mixed martial arts, building a modest professional record of 2-2 while fighting primarily in regional promotions. Those who knew him described a disciplined athlete who balanced training with time spent among friends and family.

While he did not compete on the sport's biggest stages, his commitment to MMA reflected a broader dedication to competition and personal growth.

Local officials and members of the MMA community described his final actions as selfless, noting he sacrificed his life to save others. He is remembered for his bravery and willingness to act in a moment of danger.
