Sunday's NASCAR race in Atlanta could be in trouble

Sunday's NASCAR race at Atlanta might be in trouble.

Sunday afternoon's NASCAR Cup Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway might turn into a weekday race.

There's a good chance of rain on Sunday in Atlanta, and it could force the race to be moved to Monday or Tuesday.

According to AccuWeather, there's over a 50 percent chance of rain for most of Sunday afternoon. The race is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. ET, but rain might force a delay and even a postponement.

The rain is expected to stop around noon on Monday, so if the race is postponed, they could race Monday afternoon or evening or even on Tuesday.

NASCAR officials likely want to run the race as soon as possible if track conditions are permitting, so we could even see a Monday night race.

As Matt Weaver of AutoWeek points out, this is a similar situation to September, 2011 in Atlanta where rain postponed the race until Tuesday. The track hasn't been repaved since 1997, which leads NASCAR and track officials to be more cautious when it comes to rain.

The last race to be postponed was last year at Bristol Motor Speedway in April. Rain pushed the race back to Monday. Jimmie Johnson won the race a day later.

Johnson has five wins at Atlanta, and he'll look to add to that number after a disappointing finish at Daytona. Brad Keselowski is the defending winner at Atlanta. Martin Truex Jr. believe this race will reveal the true contenders, so we'll see if Austin Dillon can defend his Daytona 500 victory with another win or high finish.
