Baseball instituted instant replay to avoid awful calls like this

Was he really safe? Certainly looks that way.

Have you ever seen a call blown so badly?

The Atlanta Braves and Pittsburgh Pirates were deadlocked in a six-and-a-half hour, 19-inning game, when umpire Jerry Meals made quite possibly the worst call in all of sports.

Julio Lugo charged home plate after a ground ball toward third gave him cause to go. The ball clearly beat Lugo to home plate "by a mile" as the announcers called it, but Meals called Lugo safe after it appeared very clear that he was out at home. Of course MLB and Bud Selig at the time were too stubborn to implement a replay system so the call couldn't be overturned.

The call resulted in the Braves winning 4-3.
