A former high school lacrosse standout who once planned to play at the Division I level was one of two people killed in a head-on crash in New York's Hudson Valley.

Peter B. Bonenfant, 19, and Philip F. Jacobus, 72, died following the Sunday morning crash on Route 28 in the town of Olive, according to New York State Police.
Police said Bonenfant was driving a 2024 Chevrolet westbound shortly before 6:50 a.m. when his vehicle crossed into the eastbound lane and collided head-on with a 2021 Mercedes-Benz driven by Jacobus.
Both men had to be extricated from their vehicles and were transported to hospitals. Bonenfant later died at HealthAlliance Hospital in Kingston, while Jacobus was transferred to MidHudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie, where he also died.
Authorities are investigating the crash and have not said what caused Bonenfant's vehicle to cross into the opposite lane.
Bonenfant graduated from Smithtown High School West on Long Island in 2025 and had committed to play Division I lacrosse at Queens University of Charlotte. According to Newsday, he ultimately decided to remain closer to home and pursue studies to become an electrician.
He was also the adoptive son of Chris Bonenfant, a retired Suffolk County and New York City police officer.
A fundraiser established for Bonenfant's family remembered the teenager for his outgoing personality and ability to make others feel welcome.
"Peter deserved more time," the memorial said.
Jacobus, meanwhile, was a longtime medical industry executive and the founder and president of medical equipment supplier Owen Kane Holdings. He also founded DOTmed, an online medical equipment marketplace.
New York State Police said their investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
