Tom Gores isn't stopping at basketball. Not even close.

The Detroit Pistons owner is now firmly in the mix to buy the San Diego Padres, according to multiple reports. A source confirmed to the Detroit Free Press that Gores is among several billionaire heavyweights circling the franchise.
This could get expensive. Real expensive.
Per The Athletic, the Padres could fetch more than $3.5 billion. That would smash the current MLB record set when Steve Cohen bought the New York Mets for $2.42 billion back in 2020.
Gores would not be going in alone. He already owns Platinum Equity and holds a 27 percent stake in the Los Angeles Chargers. Adding an MLB team would take his sports footprint to another level.
But this is no layup.
Three other deep-pocketed groups are reportedly in the race. That includes José E. Feliciano, co-founder of Clearlake Capital and part-owner of Chelsea FC. There is also Dan Friedkin, who owns Everton FC and AS Roma. Then there is Joe Lacob, the man behind the Golden State Warriors and Golden State Valkyries.
In other words, Gores is swimming with sharks.
Now it becomes a waiting game. Who blinks first? And who is willing to go higher than anyone ever has for a baseball team?
