That is to say, the defending champs, dominated from start to finish, as they outscored their rivals in the first quarter 43-24 while hitting 10 threes (59% from the field).

And the Celtics didn't let up as they shot 26-for-45 from deep throughout the first three quarters.

They were on pace to easily break the NBA all-time record for most three pointers in the game. However, after Al Horford made a three-pointer with 8:54 left in the game, the Boston Celtics went on to miss their last 13 attempts from deep. The Celtics finished the game 29-of-61 (47.5% 3PT).

As a result, the Celtics were only able to tie the NBA three-point record (29) with the Milwaukee Bucks, who also made 29 threes vs. the Miami Heat on December 29, 2020, shooting 29-of-51 (56.9% 3PT).

In view of the attempt to break the record, the Celtics were certainly going for it. As the crowd was cheering them on, they kept chucking jump long-range shots.

Despite being on fire through the first three quarters, they couldn't buy a bucket at the end of the game.

To emphasize their struggles at the end, Jordan Walsh air balled the only shot he took all night, and this was actually the team's last try for the record.

To point out, the Celtics had a chance to take one more shot, but they decided to show good sportsmanship and  dribble out the clock.

All in all, the Celtics still broke their franchise three-point record (28) and came away with victory, as they were led by Jayson Tatum, who scored 37 points (8-for-11 3PT) and dished out 10 assists.

The starting five combined for making 26 threes on just 41 attempts (63.4% 3PT).

Notably, the Celtics led the entire NBA with 16.1 made 3's per game (38.3%) last season. And with 81 games left this season, the Celtics will certainly have many more chances to break the record, and if they keep shooting the way they did on opening night, they should be able to make 30 3's in one game.
