LaKeith Stanfield will play Dennis Rodman in Lionsgate's upcoming film 48 Hours in Vegas, a comedy based on the infamous trip Rodman took during the 1998 NBA Finals while playing for the Chicago Bulls.
Yes, that trip.
As relayed by Variety, the story centers on Rodman's mid-Finals escape to Las Vegas while the Bulls were chasing another championship. It became one of the most unbelievable side stories in NBA history and only added to Rodman's reputation as basketball's ultimate wild card.
Originally, Jonathan Majors was set to play Rodman. But the role was recast after Majors' 2023 conviction stemming from a domestic violence incident. Now Stanfield steps in to take over the part.
The Oscar-nominated actor, best known for roles in Get Out, Sorry to Bother You, and the FX series Atlanta, said he is excited to bring Rodman's story to life.
"I'm genuinely excited to help create an exhilarating, joyful work that honors the legacy of Rodman and other trailblazers," Stanfield said.
Director Rick Famuyiwa, known for work on The Mandalorian and Ahsoka, will lead the project.
And honestly, few sports stories are more perfect for Hollywood. Dennis Rodman disappearing to Vegas in the middle of the NBA Finals is the kind of thing you could never make up, which is exactly why they're making a movie about it.
