According to Dwain Price of the Star-Telegram, Dallas Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki plans to opt out of his contract this summer. He signed a three-year, $25 million contract in 2014 with the understanding that he would play out the entire contract until he retired.

Dirk is likely to re-sign with the Mavericks, but may do so to get a little more money to end his career. Or he may go the other way since the salary cap is expected to go over $90 million this offseason. If he takes less money the Mavs could be in line to sign some big name free agents unlike what they did last summer.

Nowitzki's salary for next season under his current contract would be $8,692,184. He has spent all 18 years of his career in Dallas since being drafted with the No. 9 overall pick in the 1998 NBA draft.
