The veteran forward has declined his nearly $28 million player option for the 2026-27 season, according to a report from The Athletic, confirming an earlier report from ESPN.

The move doesn't necessarily signal the end of Green's longtime run with the Golden State Warriors. Instead, it gives the four-time NBA champion an opportunity to negotiate a new contract as free agency begins.

Green, 36, remains one of the league's most respected defensive players and emotional leaders, even as his offensive production has declined. He averaged 8.4 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists in 68 games last season. His rebounding average was his lowest since his rookie year, while his assist numbers were his lowest since the 2014-15 campaign.

Despite those statistical declines, Green continues to be valued for his defensive versatility, basketball IQ and leadership in the locker room.

Golden State endured an injury-filled season that ended with a Play-In Tournament loss to the Phoenix Suns. After that defeat, Green made it clear he hoped to remain with the only NBA franchise he has ever known.

"If the question is, 'Where do I want to be?' I think it's pretty obvious, guys, where the hell I'm going," Green said. "If they want me here, I'll be right here."

One of the most talked-about moments of Green's season came just before Christmas, when he left the bench following a heated sideline exchange with coach Steve Kerr during a game against the Orlando Magic. Kerr publicly apologized the following day, and the longtime relationship between player and coach appeared to remain intact.

Green has repeatedly spoken about his desire to help sustain the Warriors' culture beyond the current championship core, saying he wants the franchise to remain competitive long after he and his longtime teammates are gone.

Whether that future includes another contract with Golden State or a fresh start elsewhere should become clearer as NBA free agency unfolds.
