ESPN finds a way to keep one of its best talents away from the competition

A huge get for the Worldwide Network.

Zach Lowe is an absolute basketball savant and has been one of ESPN's brightest stars since they stole him away from Sports Illustrated in 2012. He originally joined Grantland as part of Bill Simmons' network of geniuses and transitioned to ESPN.com once the site was shut down and Simmons moved on to HBO.

Lowe's contract was set to run up this fall, but ESPN swooped in with an offer he couldn't refuse and kept him away from an "aggressive" offer Bleacher Report sent his way. There were rumors since the Finals ended that Lowe would join former coworker Jonathan Abrams who bolted for B/R.

Deadspin is reporting that B/R offered a $1 million a year contract, but those same people giving them that information are quick to point out how ridiculous that number is. Hanging onto Lowe means ESPN has won its second big basketball battle as they were able to retain Ramona Shelbourne who was getting a pretty good offer from Adrian Wojnarowski and The Vertical.
