ESPN is set for a massive upgrade to its NBA coverage team

This was a much needed move.

A pair of familiar faces are returning to ESPN's NBA Countdown soon.

According to ESPN, Magic Johnson and Michael Wilbon are rejoining ESPN's NBA pregame show on a limited basis this season. Johnson was previously on the show for five years, while Wilbon served as an analyst on the show for three years.

Johnson will begin working during the slate of Christmas games, and he will join Wilbon and host Sage Steele during ESPN's nine Saturday games throughout the season. Both Johnson and Wilbon left the show in 2013, and it was rumored Johnson left the show amid disputes with Bill Simmons, who was also on NBA Countdown at the time.

While Johnson's basketball analysis is often underwhelming, he is one of the greatest players in league history, and fans and players respect his opinions on the sport. Wilbon is more popular for his work on Pardon the Interruption, but he adds another veteran presence to the broadcast.
