ESPN quietly pulls betting graphic during NBA gambling coverage

ESPN found itself in an awkward spot Thursday morning and viewers caught it right away. As the network's Get Up crew discussed the NBA's massive gambling scandal, the familiar "ESPN Bet" graphic quietly disappeared from the bottom of the screen. The timing wasn't lost on anyone.

Host Mike Greenberg was talking about how leagues and networks once distanced themselves from gambling but now openly embrace it. That's when producers pulled the ESPN Bet promo, the network's own sportsbook brand, from view.

A small move, but a telling one.

The change came as the scandal dominated headlines. Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups and Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier were both arrested Thursday as part of an FBI investigation into illegal gambling operations.

Former Cleveland Cavaliers player and coach Damon Jones was charged, too, accused of sharing inside information tied to NBA prop bets.

With ESPN simultaneously covering those arrests and promoting its betting platform, it's easy to see why someone in the control room might have hit delete on that banner.

There's a big difference between legal sportsbooks and the criminal operations now under federal investigation.

Still, for a moment, ESPN's gamble on sports betting clashed directly with the day's biggest story — and fans noticed every second of it.
