The legendary former San Antonio Spurs coach married Mary Barth Budenholzer, the ex-wife of his longtime former assistant Mike Budenholzer, according to TMZ Sports.
A marriage license obtained by the outlet showed that Popovich and Mary exchanged vows Sept. 16 in Texas. The document was filed in Bexar County, which includes San Antonio.
Mike Budenholzer spent 17 seasons on Popovich's coaching staff from 1996 through 2013. During that run, the Spurs won four NBA championships before Budenholzer left to become head coach of the Atlanta Hawks.
He later won another championship as head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks in 2021.
Mike and Mary quietly divorced in 2016. Popovich's first wife, Erin, died in 2018 following an undisclosed illness. She and Popovich were married for more than four decades and had two children.
It is unclear when Popovich and Mary began their relationship, although TMZ noted that they attended Spurs games together during the 2025-26 season. The Spurs declined to comment on the marriage.
Popovich stepped down as San Antonio's head coach in 2025 following a health scare, ending one of the greatest coaching runs in professional sports history. He moved into a full-time role as the franchise's president of basketball operations.
The 77-year-old won five championships and an NBA-record 1,422 regular-season games during his 29 seasons as the Spurs' head coach. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2023.
