Grizzlies’ Ja Morant Gaslights The NBA Over His Controversial ‘Grenade’ Celebration

Memphis Grizzlies superstar Ja Morant has taken his fascination with "weapons" to a whole new level, as he recently featured a new in-game celebration that shows him launching a grenade into the crowd.

"That's my celebration now until somebody else has a problem with it, and I'll find another one," Morant said Thursday.

While it appears that Morant pretends to pull the pin and launch the explosive into the crowd, by then covering his own ears... Morant says it's not what you think it is.

The 25-year-old gave an in-depth explanation of what this celebration entails (via X).

"Listen, it's not what you think it is. I'm taking my words, and I'm throwing them [grenades] out there. I'm speaking Ja. I'm being Ja. I'm going to take my words, I'm going to throw them out there, and then I'm going to block out the noise. And that's what I'm doing. So when you see me do that, that's what I'm doing. I'm saying what I got to say to the world, and I'm blocking out the noise in the midst of what's coming back my way. And that's how it's going to be."

To point out, this comes just a week after the NBA was said to be investigating his "finger gun" gesture pointed at the Golden State Warriors.

Ultimately, Morant also did this same emote in the next game vs. the Miami Heat and was fined $75,000.

Notably, this isn't the first time Morant got in trouble for something "gun-related" as he was previously suspended eight games at the end of the 2022-23 season, after he was seen flashing a gun in a Denver nightclub.

In addition, he was suspended for 25 games at the start of the 2023-24 season after he was on an Instagram live video with a gun in the car.

And after all this, Morant just can't help himself.

While many fans have pointed out Morant's impressive creativity, it's evident Morant learned his lesson after the fine, by exchanging his finger-gun three-point celebration to now be a grenade launcher.

Following a 141-125 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Thursday night, the Grizzlies (47-33) now find themselves in a three-way tie (Timberwolves, Warriors) for the Western Conference No. 6-8 seeds with two game left on the schedule.

Considering the playoff seeding implications, Morant and Memphis will attempt to win out the rest of their games as they face-off with the Denver Nuggets on Friday at (9:00 pm ET) and the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday (3:30 pm ET).

With this in mind, fans in the crowd should be extra careful every time Ja hits a three-pointer.
